Tell us about your business.

In so many ways Etsy and I have always been made for each other—I just didn't know it until the beginning of 2011. It all started with the idea of the homemade holiday… I had watched the family tradition of making the holiday cookies each year as I was growing up and have taken the ‘handmade’ way of life to heart with all my gift giving. A few years ago – my daughter and I decided to wrap our treats with a cloth napkin to enjoy after the cookies were gone. There were a huge hit. I was strongly encouraged to make more napkins, as well as placemats, and this is where it all began. Being able to create a business based on this premise is so rewarding. I can truly say that I love what I do everyday and can’t wait to get to work in the morning. My dreams are getting bigger and I look forward to making them happen.

What makes your business stand out?

I have never been one to do things because it’s what everyone else is doing. I love clean lines, modern style and am not afraid of color. These are the principles that I work from. Paying attention to your marketplace is critical to successfully growing a business. I try to offer a great variety in each of my product lines – for a customer to connect with what they like, but always working from that initial foundation. I have a big heart – it is who I am and I strive to share that heart with my customers by giving them a great experience in my shop from beginning to end. Whether it comes through the warmth in my products themselves or the small details that accompany them, like the handmade thank you note that matches the fabric used in the purchase, I want my customers to feel that they have walked into my store (even though I am online), we’ve had a great chat when purchasing their item, and they can’t wait to receive it and use it in their home.

What's the best business advice you've received?

At an Etsy convention earlier this year, I heard a speaker say “Let yourself be silently drawn by the pull of what you really love – your heart will never lead you astray.” It is a great way to live. I hear and feel this all the time from friends and family—trusting my instincts and taking risks becomes easy when you have support from those around you. It is scary, but can be truly worth it.
