Tell us about your business.

S.S. Brooklyn designs and manufactures classic beach gear inspired by urban fashion. Our products combine our love for American-made products, Brooklyn style and the beach to bring high-fashion, locally-made board shorts direct to consumers at affordable prices. Our headquarters is located in the DUMBO neighborhood in Brooklyn, just footsteps from the Manhattan and Brooklyn Bridges. All of our products are hand-made by highly skilled artisans in New York City's famous Garment District. We launched our first product, Brooklyn Surf Shorts, in 2013 via Kickstarter. 134 backers supported our project and helped bring our brand to life. We plan to add more Made in NYC products to our online store in the near future. Our founder is John Coghlan, an entrepreneur and life-long surfer, who lives in Brooklyn with his wife, Laurie, and dog, Brody.

What makes your business stand out?

MADE IN NYC - Our Surf Shorts are designed, cut, sewn, and finished by amazing designers and manufacturers in New York City. The result is a beautiful product that supports the American economy. CUT - These are not traditional board shorts. Brooklyn Surf Shorts are cut just above the knee with a slight taper and a small side slit for increased comfort and flexibility. The styling is modern yet timeless and will look great on any guy and any body type. COLOR - Brooklyn Surf Shorts come in classic colors that will always be in style - navy blue and army green. Your board shorts should look as cool as real shorts; not scream "hang ten, dude." COMFORT - Our board shorts are so comfortable and perfectly styled that you will want to where them everywhere and you can! Our quick-drying fabric, drawstring waistband and three deep pockets to stash your stuff will allow you to transition from the beach or pool to happy hour at your favorite summertime hangout.

What's the best business advice you've received?

"The journey is the reward" is a famous quote by Steve Jobs. It's also a piece of advice that I constantly rely on when I am working on new ideas and businesses. By focusing on the journey as the reward, it pushes me to make sure that I am having fun, learning and enjoying what I am doing rather than using my work as a means to reach an imagined goal.
