Applique...This nearly lost surface art technique has been around for centuries. However, this is not your grandmother's version of Old World

Tell us about your business.

Applique Artistry was born from an innate love of textiles and color, as well as an early devotion to the fine craft of sewing. An introduction to the ancient art through a family friend led to a few experimentations that slowly evolved into a passion that would prove to be hard to corral. Based on a deep appreciation for the philosophy of the Arts & Crafts Movement, each piece is one of a kind and finely honed with the greatest attention to detail, preserving Old World aesthetic. Over the years, the focus of the work has evolved to include every design genre but never deterred from the original philosophy. From a historic perspective, applique was one of the oldest surface design arts, originating back to China 3,000 B.C, used as embellishment for the very wealthy. Into the present day, this age old technique has been updated to represent technical advances. However, I still adhere to the strictest disciplines: hand cut/machine stitched, without the aid of computers

What makes your business stand out?

Detail. Detail. Detail...Down to the tiniest of French knots embellishing some work, it's the smallest detail and the most measured of stitches that spotlights Applique Artistry's refined interpretations of historic and modern day motifs, notably Art Nouveau, Deco and the above mentioned A&C. Working with designers as well as collectors to create unique and highly personal statements in natural fibers, Applique Artistry specializes in pillows, bedding, window treatments and tabletop. Having been acknowledged in many publications, both local and national, in addition to being invited to participate in several Designer Showcases (S.F., Pasadena and Marin County), the greatest honor came this spring when we were commissioned to create custom pillows for the Thomas Edison National Park and Museum!
