Tell us about your business.

The goal was simple when Paul Burns founded Fireclay Tile in 1986: Make beautiful tile for customers in the way they want it, when they want it. Over the last 27 years we have evolved into a very progressive manufacturer of sustainable tile products, while remaining true to this fundamental belief. By staying focused on domestic manufacturing, vertical integration and the traditional craft of tile, Fireclay has become a leader in domestic, handmade tile manufacturing. We are based in San Jose, CA where our factory showroom and glass tile factory is located. Our ceramic factory is located in Aromas, CA, and we also have a showroom in San Francisco, CA. We sell our products directly and through over 160 tile and green building material showrooms throughout the US, Canada, and UK. Our customers include Whole Foods, Starbucks, Google, and hopefully one day you!

What makes your business stand out?

Every order we make is unique and made custom. We continue to hand make 100% of our product in Northern California, utilizing time honored techniques and modern technology. Burns, a self proclaimed scavenger hates waste and loves efficiency. This has lead the company to incorporate a variety of recycled materials into our ceramic and glass tile lines over the years. These materials include; recycled waste glass, recycled granite dust from a quarry located next to their manufacturing facility, and most recently post consumer plumbing fixtures destined for the landfill. Today we are experimenting with waste glass leftover from old CRT computers and televisions. The future is bright at Fireclay, and focused on making tile easy for customers by pairing color and pattern, allowing anyone to create the exact product that they want, made for them, by Fireclay Tile.

What's the best business advice you've received?

Know what you are good at. There are so many distractions to success that "not going there" is just as important as where you are heading.
