Julia Paul Pottery
Tell us about your business.Located in the mountains of Virginia, Julia Paul Pottery is influenced by the local landscape, which is filled with fields and forest. Distinguished by refined simplicity with an earthy spirit, Julia Paul Pottery is dictated by quality and function, with fresh, lasting designs and natural, unique detail. From tableware to one-of-a-kind modern decor, each piece is elegant and well designed, but never fussy. All tableware is made with food-safe glazes, and the studio follows eco-conscious, sustainable practices, always seeking to bridge the connection between beautiful and smart. Three kinds of regionally-sourced stoneware are used, each chosen for its unique composition, beauty, and quality. All glazes are lead free, and works are fired in an electric kiln up to cone 5-6, which is over 2160°F. Did you know the surface of the sun is about 9900°F?
What makes your business stand out?I am an artist and was originally a painter, and I work in a relatively intuitive way that includes taking photographs and drawing forms, as well as tapping into my own interests. I am interested in contemporary art and design, and I relate my work to what is around me. Flexibility and spontaneity with the clay and glazes are key, as it allows the most interesting aspects of the materials to help dictate the outcome. Each pot is an opportunity for something new and exciting. I often pair the display of the finished pieces with Polaroid pictures that I have taken in the mountains around my home.
What's the best business advice you've received? The best advice has been to self-actualize. Similar to "following your dreams," it also means that becoming a full, balanced person will bring success.
