Maupston Design Studio LLC
Tell us about your business.YARN AS ART. Anna Upston, a classically trained mezzo-soprano, took time off from singing when she became a mom. She began selling her handspun yarns to a local yarn store in 2006, and then at an area Farmers Market in 2008. Five years later, Maupston Design Studio has sold its luxury yarns at over 8 NYC area markets, juried Art and Craft shows, online and by special order. Maupston now encompasses the work of 5 additional handspinning artists, each selected and trained by Anna. Maupston Design Studio approaches creating yarn as an art, with a view toward color, shape, composition and texture. We have a constantly changing stock of yarn designs in small, but exquisite, lots. In the future, Maupston will be promoting our gallery of yarns and finished textile artwork online, and offering our first artisanal mill spun yarn, Maupston LINE, in 2014 . We delight in blurring the line between "art" and "craft", and continue to spin art yarns based on creative inspiration.
What makes your business stand out?Our business is based on creative output. I take students with prior training in fine art, design or music, teach them handspinning technique, and let them run with it! We love local and exotic fibers, bold color and dramatic texture. Some yarn studios offer only 3 or 4 designs in varying colors. Mills mass-produce yarns found everywhere. Maupston has 40+ designs, each with just enough yarn for a project or two. Designs sell out. New designs are added. Stock constantly changes with the creative whim of the artists. The beauty of working with yarn like this is that it's easy to make something beautiful of your own! With huge color and texture variation, Maupston yarns can yield a work of true wearable art with very simple stitches. A machine from a mill will always be faster than I am. But I want to be an individual, and spin like an artist. This is what makes Maupston unique. Wishing you Happiness & Creativity! Anna Upston, owner Maupston Design Studio
