Brooklyn Soapworks

American Made Since 2012

Justine Slattery

Brooklyn, New York
I make handcrafted all natural soap in Brooklyn. I use only food ingredients, natural clays, and homegrown or local herbs and flowers.

Tell us about your business.

I have always had very sensitive skin. From the time I was a little girl, my skin never liked anything but the most natural ingredients. As a child of the modern age, my skin was angry most of the time. I started experimenting with natural masks and things in high school and then I got into soapmaking in my 20s. I thought soap was interesting, and I needed something where I really new the ingredients. I cook a lot at home and I know what is in my food; I wanted to know exactly what was in my skincare. "If you wouldn't want to eat it, you shouldn't wash with it" is the motto I live by.

What makes your business stand out?

Everything that is in my soap is stuff that you could find in my kitchen (minus the lye of course). What goes on your skin is as important as what goes in your body and I treat the two the same. If its good for you to eat, it's probably good for your skin too!
