I design modern travel posters using patterns that are inspired by imaginary vacations. The series is called Places I Have Never Been.

Tell us about your business.

My love of pattern began as a graphic designer for the beauty company Fresh. I left and opened my own studio and wanted to continue to draw patterns. I've always been a daydreamer, a research nerd and a travel lover so I decided to draw patterns based my imaginary vacations. The collection started just as a calendar and then grew to art prints, cards, iphone cases and more. First I research a place by watching movies, reading, talking to people, then I make collages in my sketchbooks (and more recently pinboards) of my inspiration. After I do a lot of sketching/doodling and then start to develop the patterns in Adobe Illustrator. The City Print patterns are the base of the business, I then added a modern Map Print design and a Landmark series which are digital collages of my patterns. Personalizing our prints for Wedding and Baby Gifts, is very popular. I plan to apply our patterns to gift wrap, stationery goods, housewares and textiles as well as develop a wholesale business.

What makes your business stand out?

My multi-layered pattern drawings are complex and colorful, adding a uniqueness that sets us apart from other travel prints. Place is something that deeply resonates with people, everyone has a personal connection to at least one place. I love seeing the joy that our prints bring to people, hearing their stories and memories... and seeing how excited they are that we gave love to their small town or their large city.

What's the best business advice you've received?

"Don't build a mansion when all you need is a house." That was actually my advice to a design client, but I follow it myself to this day. When I started I was thinking too big too fast, which is the downfall of many small businesses. Now I am more of a planner and very conscious about business decisions and money.
