BLAMtastic Luscious Lip Balm
Tell us about your business.Created by sisters Lily and Melanie Sandler, at ages nine and ten, BLAMtastic began as a project in the Sandler home and has grown to become an international brand. Mom Renee was discouraged by the low number of women CEOs in the Fortune 500 and wanted her daughters to know they could do anything they wanted, like run a company or create a product, so they did. When the girls started BLAMtastic, they made of list of what was important to them. First on the list—they wanted to keep manufacturing in the U.S., to keep their neighbors employed. Oher companies told them, “You can’t compete if you don’t go overseas.” The Sandlers set out to change that. They came up with their own method of sourcing they call “Targeted Local Sourcing.” The idea is to start with Atlanta. If they can’t source here, they expand their search statewide. If not in Georgia, then regionally, then nationally. BLAMtastic now uses around 30 U.S. companies to make its products.
What makes your business stand out?BLAMtastic is the only naturally based lip balm, made in the USA, for boys and girls. We think it's also the only lip balm created by two young girls.
What's the best business advice you've received?Don't ever give up. We started selling BLAMtastic on the school ground and slowly made our way into small shops and then bigger stores. That was six years ago, and now BLAM can be found in larger national chains. Hard work does pay off.
