We design and craft historically-inspired small-scale buildings suitable for garden and pool that ship nationwide fully assembled and finished.

Tell us about your business.

Gardensheds began with the notion that there was a need for architecturally designed, well-crafted small-scale buildings reminiscent of dependency buildings that once characterized a lifestyle of the 18th century. Hands-on owner Ken Smith, who once worked with the late fashion designer, Geoffrey Beene and the architect, Michael Graves, brings a keen eye to the business and guides each client and project through the easy-to-understand process. Each building is made-to-order according to a client's specifications such that each building leaves with an owner's "fingerprints" on it. In addition to milling their own timber Gardensheds produces their subcomponents, including windows, doors, cupolas, and hand-forged hardware in-house. A CAD Approval drawing is provided to each client. A familiar refrain owner Smith hears from clients is that the company's hand-built buildings are too nice to be called "sheds." A passionate clientele eager to "spread the word" keeps Gardensheds busy.

What's the best business advice you've received?

A few lessons learned in graduate school at Cranbrook Academy of Art: Design is the foundation. God is in the details. Aim High. Do it right or don't do it at all. Make a difference. Don't compromise. Quality and authenticity will always find an audience. And probably the most important, follow your passion and be true to yourself.
