Karie Reinertson & Robert Maddox
Tell us about your business.Rob and I started SHELTER in the summer of 2010 in Vermont. That summer was so dreamy - we filled our days with hiking, foraging, sewing bags, canning, building a cabin, and swimming in rivers. The bags took off pretty quickly and I started making them full time the following winter when we moved to Asheville, NC. As vintage bag and textile appreciators, Rob and I have so many ideas that have been patiently waiting in line to be made for many years. I start the design process by using a simple cotton fabric and make the piece without a pattern to get an idea of the lines and shape. Once I've made a couple iterations, I will draft a pattern from there. Currently we're working on an exclusive collection of all-leather handbags. I'm enjoying digging deeper into my art and making more collaborative, custom pieces.
