Botanistix Home Decor
Tell us about your business. As an avid orchid lover in NJ moving to SW Fl was utopia for my orchid passion in '07. Suddenly, instead of being content with the beautiful blooms, all I could see was the ugly, wooden stick holding the stalks upright. Botanistix was born out of necessity. I started participating in fundraisers and shows and started to find my loyal client base. Secondary products came, seaside inspired napkin rings, lamp decor similar to a tassel but more coastal inspired & now a line of abstract glass lamp finials. As each product found an audience, I was able to move to the next request. I love the creative process. I start with a blank slate and just let the product develop. Sometimes I am recreating something I dreamt about, it varies. In 5 years Botanistix items are in 3 retailers & 2 Botanical Gardens. Botanistix is now a registered trademark. Each unique stake is handcrafted by me & now branded with the logo on the stake. The glass finials are the next big focus
What makes your business stand out?Botanistix orchid support stakes take the place of the ugly, wooden support stake that accompany most orchids so that the stalk doesn't break. People do not know there are options to supporting the orchid stalk, so marketing is challenging. When people see that beautiful floral arrangements are even prettier with a little jeweled dragonfly peaking out from behind one of the flowers, I enjoy that moment so much. Its about educating potential clients, opening their eyes to another option. I understand not everyone is going to like a botanistix floral stake, especially the purists. Marketing my other items, I deal with more competition and less educating of my potential client. I have had to define my look and stay true to it. Seaside inspired in a warm contemporary style is accurate. The designs are clean & they can cross over from coastal, to traditional & contemporary, a real advantage I handle every aspect of the business. Thats the good news and the bad news!
What's the best business advice you've received? There are 2 1. Love what you do so it does not have to feel like "work." In NJ, I had an interior design business. I was almost giddy when I entered showrooms to search for fabrics and furniture. I still love being surrounded by beautiful possibilities. The more selections, the better I like it. I feel the same excitement when I am working in my studio. 2. Listen to your inner voice, it will never steer you wrong. Confidence, successes, and paying attention to missteps helped to develop this as a invaluable skill.
