Studio DKS by Deborah Shavlik
Tell us about your business. My line is designed and created in Brooklyn NY. Focusing on both needle and wet felting felting, I create edgy, contemporary graphics and illustrations for decorative pillows, furniture and accessories. The narrative of the line is tongue-in-cheek humor, or edgy images unexpectedly tempered by the material. Started in 2011, my line quickly grew and I refined both the process and images. Most of my clients are high-end design boutiques or museum stores, and I just joined a design collective storefront in Hudson NY. Expanding into cast brass hardware for 2013, I'm now also working with wax carving to create original designs for the home. Having lifeling experience as an artist in many different mediums, as well as a dozen years in corporate industrial design, I applied my experience and skillset to create a unique line of my own. Textiles were a new medium to me and the felting process grabbed my interest, so I had fun getting my hands on it and seeing what I could do with it.
What makes your business stand out?I'm in a unique little niche: many of the images I create are one-of-a-kind drawings in fibers, but are also mass produced so the line is someplace in-between art and design. They are crazy labor intensive and very tactile peices.
