Tell us about your business.

I believe I was born a maker. Some people just have it in their blood and I'm one of them. I've been making things since I was a kid - doll clothes, milk carton castles, clothes hanger sculptures. As a teenager, I made my prom and winter formal dresses. As an adult, I've made all or part of my wardrobe and a variety of craft items that I then sold at craft shows around Philadelphia - silk screened neckties, multi-fabric pillows, screened men's underwear or aprons that I screened then sewed. It's in me. I can't stop making things. When I get inspired, I'm often moved to sit down and just cut paper or fabric until the shapes I see in my mind come to life. It was such an inspiration that led to my ideas surrounding weddings. I began Shera Simon Designs because I love to see the beautiful images from wedding & engagement photos evolve into products that bring them out of the photo albums and into the every day lives of my customers.

What makes your business stand out?

I make my business unique. Shera Simon Designs is an experience that gives the customer the option of using their wedding colors and their photos for their event and then their home. It's a level of customization that couples are looking for without feeling that their ideas are silly or over done. I make it acceptable for couples, gay or straight, to celebrate their union on their special day and to continue celebrating beyond the ceremony since most of the gifts double as stylish home accessories. I also realize that their are other creative people out there who may feel more comfortable making their own wedding accessories which is why I also offer the option of purchasing the PDF instructions for many of the products in my line.

What's the best business advice you've received?

Be yourself because everyone else is already taken. - Oscar Wilde
