Tell us about your business.

Kordal officially launched in September of 2012 with our Spring '13 collection at the Capsule Tradeshow. We had put together a kickstarter project to help make the first set of samples and pay for tradeshow costs. Luckily our project was funded and landed us a feature in the New York Times! It was then that we realized this could really turn into something exciting. One of the most important parts about Kordal is that all or our sweaters are made by hand on Manual knitting machines. This helps us to be more sustainable and not create any excess inventory. We also work with machine knitters here in NYC. All of our sweaters are constructed with a focus on craftsmanship and ease. We are making clothing for the women who wants to feel beautiful and unique but also smart and relaxed.

What makes your business stand out?

When I started my knitwear line I wanted to focus on creating beautiful well-made garments that highlighted texture and opacity. Though I work quite deliberately, consciously employing both traditional and innovative techniques, I allow my unconscious to take the lead. By starting with a simple classic garment as a canvas, I am able to use a mixture of textures, opacities, and colors that create a truly innovative piece. Limiting myself to designing all knitwear has informed my creative process. It is important for me to have restrictions, to keep the work challenging and interesting for the viewer or wearer.
