RD Shady

American Made Since 2006

Lara Anderson

Olympia, Washington
We are committed to providing an easy way for people to enjoy well-designed home décor and create beautiful spaces that inspire and delight.

Tell us about your business.

I opened Red Door Interiors with my mother and business partner in 2006. Our passion is creating beautiful spaces. We restore old furniture and decorative accessories and delight in uncovering new beauty and functionality. We demonstrate that it’s possible to design on a budget. In our search for used treasures, we often find eye-catching lamps with tattered or outdated shades, yet it’s difficult to find attractive replacements. Inspired by the lack of options, we began prototyping a solution. In 2012, we launched RD Shady™, a patent pending line featuring interchangeable lampshade covers that zip on and off, pillow covers, table runners and nightlights. We offer a variety of fabrics and we also customize for individuals, designers, hotels and independent retailers. RD Shady™ products are currently available online and from 14 retailers in the Pacific Northwest. We plan to expand RD Shady™ nationwide. We want our brand to become a household name.

What makes your business stand out?

Our background is financially humble—but decoratively extravagant. Our friends and family were always amazed by how much we could do with so little money. We have the eye and appreciation for high quality design but we could never afford the price tag. It became our collective passion to provide beautiful homes for fellow budget watchers because we believe little changes make a big difference. We make custom design affordable and accessible to everyone.

What's the best business advice you've received?

Take it one sale at a time. People will buy into your passion. If you sell yourself, you will sell your product.
