Tell us about your business.

Hello, my name is Julie and I am the owner of Cakes And Kids. I started my business in 2010 after being laid off from my corporate job. I took my love of cake decorating and combined that with my long career in online marketing to create I create handmade fondant cake and cupcake toppers that can be customized for any party theme. They are 100% edible and shipped directly to my customers' doors. I also sell a complete line of sweet, simple and stylish party supplies that can be mixed and matched with the fondant toppers to complete your party look. Many of my party supplies also have a handmade element such my hand stamped wooden utensils and muslin favor bags. My business is continuing to grow with sales doubling each year. My dream would be to open a storefront location in my local community where I can showcase all my colorful products. Thank you for your consideration - have a sweet day!

What makes your business stand out?

My business is unique because I sell what you cannot find in your traditional big box stores, party store chains or even in your local bakery. Fondant work is a refined skill and those bakeries that work with fondant generally charge a hefty fee. For Moms who are willing to bake their own cakes or cupcakes, I offer a way to dress up those creations at a fraction of the price. My designs are unique to me and are often customized to fit a customer's theme exactly. Being a small business, I can still offer a very personalized service that makes every customer feel special.

What's the best business advice you've received?

The best business advice I've received was to "just go for it". Without that push from my family, I likely would not have taken my passion and turned it into a full time business. I am eternally grateful for that encouragement!
