Birgit Kupke-Peyla

Salinas, California
I hand construct jewelry in age-old goldsmith tradition using 22k gold and silver to create architectural designs with strength and clarity.

Tell us about your business.

My career in metals, melding my aptitude for small scale and my interest in design, started with a friendship to a young goldsmith. My curiosity prompted an invitation to visit his studio. After this euphoric experience I apprenticed with a local jeweler and then pursued classical training in the trade of gold-smithing. In 1990 I relocated from Germany to California and established a working studio. Here I design jewelry and construct one-of-a-kind and limited edition design collections, that I sell to the public in Fine Craft Shows throughout the United States. Masterfully using a multitude of ancient and modern goldsmith techniques, most of my work is constructed by hand. Choosing to work with metals of varying karat and color, gemstones and freshwater pearls, the designs are precious. Every piece reflects my fondness for strong , quiet forms and tactile surfaces. For the future I hope to establish a connection with industry to expand my reach into the world.

What makes your business stand out?

Me, myself and I run a micro business. As an artist I handle ever creative part involved in making my sketches into reality. I cut, file, solder and form the work, photograph the finished pieces and bring them to select Fine Art Festivals throughout the United States to sell them to the public. I am committed to create. I am drawn to strong forms with fine and elegant sensibility. I follow my intuition. Natural evolution, adaptation, variation drives my work
