Tell us about your business.

After being laid off from his architecture firm in 2008, Mario Gentile founded SHIFT_DESIGN to address the swiftly changing landscapes of product design, architectural design, and environmental strategy. Our products responded to the need for attainable yet aesthetically pleasing green design. We wanted to offer an alternative to expensive or poorly designed living roofs and rain tanks, with the ultimate goal of enabling an attainable green lifestyle for all. Today, our dynamic team of architects, industrial designers, landscape architects and fabricators brainstorms ways to build for and around sustainability. Our fabrication model keeps production within a 120-mile radius and profits within our local economy. From our Philadelphia base, we hope to expand regionally based on that same concept of nodal manufacturing. We look forward to partnering with suppliers and fabricators in node city locations, working towards the SHIFT_DESIGN dream of sustainability as a way of life.

What makes your business stand out?

Our company ethos is founded on the principle of conscious design. SHIFT_DESIGN places a significant emphasis on our environmental responsibility. Our fabrication model promotes waste reduction through utilizing recyclable product components made of reclaimed content. Our products are further designed with a focus on ease of installation, allowing for Do-It-Yourself projects on a residential scale while retaining scalability for commercial and urban projects. We work within the limits of sustainability to meld modern form with green function. In addition, SHIFT_DESIGN aims to develop the local economy through community emphasis and local sourcing. Alongside our residential roots, we partner with neighborhood businesses and municipal organizations alike. Our community projects range from living roofs and green walls to pop-up gardens and modular parklets. These installations are our contribution towards urban intervention, the greening of Philadelphia, and beyond.
