Tell us about your business.After moving from Mass to New York City, I missed the gardens and greenery of my hometown. Inspired by my green-thumbed mother and her rooms full of potted plants, I wanted to fill my apartment with plants to balance out the cabs and concrete. However, I found that just to fill my sill required trips across town and boroughs, and even still I had little luck. It’s not just the small apartments that stop most NY-ers from surrounding themselves with plants. It was difficult to find the resources–from the great indoor plants to apt-sized bags of potting soil and contemporary planters. Five years later, I founded The Sill, an online storefront with the singular mission: to make it easy, accessible, and fashionable to bring the outdoors in. Today, we deliver potted plants and ship planters and accessories nationwide. Recently we expanded to include plant design services for homes, startups and offices. Plants make people happy-we hear it every day-and so we aim to put a plant on every sill.
What makes your business stand out?The Sill launched after a successful Kickstarter campaign in 2012. Which then inspired us to make an online business that was both a storefront and indoor plant resource. Whether you seek plant care, a plant purchase, or plant inspiration – we have it all in one place, accessible to anyone, anywhere, anytime. We’re especially proud to offer our New York customers – a range of potted plants and design services. We start by hand selecting easy to care for indoor plants at local nurseries. Each plant variety is paired with just the right planter, most of which are handmade locally by artisans and craftsman in Brooklyn, Manhattan and Jersey City. Each plant is potted by a specialist, and comes with a plant care guide and 30 day guarantee – to ensure that anyone can enjoy having a happy, healthy indoor plant (green thumb, or not).
What's the best business advice you've received?Early one someone told us to create the experience, then the business. At The Sill, we’re not singularly focused on the classic problem-solution strategy. Rather, we’re trying to deliver our unique solution across every single customer touch point. We don’t want to be a company that you can simply summarize with a tagline or logo. The Sill is, and will continue to be, an experience.
