Love of Buttons

American Made Since 2012

Claire Rand

PARLIN, New Jersey
At "Love of Buttons", I create original handbags using imaginative fabric combinations that reflect a unique take on today’s trends.

Tell us about your business.

A few years ago, after an unsuccessful search for a particular type of handbag, I realized that I could make just the bag I wanted, in just the fabric that I wanted and I could incorporate all the details I was looking for! The bag I imagined became a reality. I came up with another idea and I made that bag too. I started making bags for my friends, and then for friends of friends. The challenge of each new design was fun! I started selling my bags; the feedback was encouraging. I seemed to have found the perfect job for me! At the end of 2012 I had the good fortune to be able to leave my full time office job and start my own company. “Love of Buttons” was born (the name a nod to my lifelong fascination with buttons). It seems that the more bags I make, the more ideas come to me. Everything I look at has the potential to become an inspiration. I sell now through Etsy, at craft shows and at “purse parties”, plus other events.

What makes your business stand out?

At “Love of Buttons” I strive to make attractive yet practical bags for all different occasions. Some of the things that set me apart from other companies are: - My products are all designed and made 100% by me. - My style is on-trend with a twist. - I like to use unexpected color and texture combinations. - I often use remnants and discontinued fabrics so pieces are truly one of a kind. - I incorporate lots of zippers, pockets, key hooks etc. - I’m always willing to work with a customer to create the bag they wants. - I love what I make and I hope you do too!

What's the best business advice you've received?

"You'll never know if you don't try" - These words have always stuck with me and there is truth to them. Take the plunge and brush fear aside! Start small and make goals. Work at pushing yourself outside of your comfort zone. Meet people in the field. Network. Understand your tax liabilities- or find someone who does. Have fun!!
