Setting a Grommet

Grommets come in two pieces -- a shank and a flat washer. Set grommets on a surface that won’t bend when hammered, like a piece of scrap wood.

  • Scissors or punch
  • Fabric
  • Grommets and grommet-setting kit
  • Hammer or mallet

  1. Step 1

Cut or punch hole in fabric, slightly smaller than inside hole of grommet shank.

  2. Step 2

Place shank through hole in fabric (with right side facing grommet).

  3. Step 3

Place shank and fabric (shank side down) on round metal setting disk. Shank should rest in circular groove found on top of disk.

  4. Step 4

Place washer over shank, so metal sandwiches fabric.

  5. Step 5

Place setting tool with pointed end inside shank. Hammer to set.
