Project

Leather Necklace

Materials

  • Leather cord
  • Shea butter
  • 1 small bead, for clasp
  • 1 large bead
  • If needed: Dremel drill with a tapered diamond bit

Steps

  1. Step 1

Cut the leather to the desired length, adding an additional 2 inches to the total length you want the necklace.

  2. Step 2

Massage a small amount of shea butter into the cord to soften the leather.

  3. Step 3

Tie an overhand knot at one end of the cord, and pull it tightly to secure. Clip off the excess.

  4. Step 4

    Thread on the small bead.

  5. Step 5

Add the large bead and place in the center of the cord. If the pre-existing hole on this bead isn't large enough to thread the leather through it, enlarge the hole using a Dremel drill with a tapered diamond bit. When drilling, be sure the bead remains completely submerged in water to ensure a clean hole and keep the bit from overheating.

  6. Step 6

On the other end of the cord, fold over the remaining 2 inches of excess leather and create a knot, making sure to leave a loop just big enough for the clasp bead to fit through.

  7. Step 7

Pull the leather taut and clip off the excess.
