Heritage Sweets

Martha Stewart Living, April 2013

Eric and Ryan Berley are keeping alive the tradition of crafting handmade sweets at Shane Confectionery, in Philadelphia, America's oldest continuously run candy shop. (it opened in 1863.) During the Easter season, it offers old-fashioned "clear toy" candies (such as foot-tall hollow bunnies, above), made by molding molten sugar -- a Pennsylvania-German custom that traces its roots to the 18th century.
