Skin-Tool Dos and Don'ts

A little intel about these sink-side staples will help you maximize their effectiveness -- and minimize their risks.

1. Textured Puff

Deploy only to your roughest spots (think elbows), and follow up with a moisturizer.
Gentle facial sponge, by Buf-Puf, $5.50, drugstore.com.

2. Oscillating Brush

This feels sooo good, it might encourage you to wash your face more faithfully, but pair it with a gentle cleanser and prevent overuse by following product guidelines.
Mia Sonic skin-cleansing system, $119 per set, clarisonic.com.

3. Cotton Washcloth

Martha's classic choice is ideal for most skin types -- so long as you opt for super-soft cotton and wash with a fresh, clean cloth every day.
Quick Dry washcloth, by Martha Stewart Collection, $8, macys.com.

4. Cellulose Sponge

While marketed for faces, this is too abrasive for all but the sturdiest skin. Your heels are tough, though, so try it with a scrub and go crazy on soles.
Cellulose facial sponge, by EcoTools, $3 for 3, target.com.

5. Cleansing Wipes

"These are a major convenience, but be sure to choose a noncomedogenic type to avoid risking skin flare-ups," suggests Amy Wechsler, a New York City dermatologist.
Clean & Mild makeup remover cloths, $5 for 20, olay.com.

6. Mesh Mitt

It's sold as a facial product, but Wechsler urges a strict neckdown limit to its usage. This sort of textured rubber or plastic implement and a creamy wash make for a winning combo.
Facial sponge, by Spacell, $28 for 3, blissworld.com.

7. Soft Brush

"This model is a great option for faces because its bristles are incredibly soft. It won't irritate skin or exacerbate acne," says Wechsler.
Cleansing massage brush, $25, shiseido.com.

I would love to try all the products. I love testing out new things, especially beauty products. I have had some type of skin issues all my life and have found that by trying all types of products I can find the best for me. Clean skin is essential to having great skin and I have improved my skin over the years and would like to continue to do so.

It's a challenge to find the right product for the varied needs of aging skin. In my mid-50's, I'd like to try using the soft facial brush or oscillating brush to smooth out dry areas on my face. However, I hadn't thought about using cellulose pads for rough feet ... what a great idea!

    Dear Martha,
As a Registered Nurse and busy mother of six I would love to use the Mia Sonic skin-cleansing brush on my face. My sonic toothbrush is just what I need when its late and I'm tired. Seriously---difficult to choose only one since they all have different qualities. I love make up and love special products that help remove makeup easily. They all sound like fun to try, so I would like to sample them all. If I must choose only one then perhaps the oscillating brush since I have never used one of those. If Martha Stewart recommends these products, then I trust they will all be excellent! Thank you! And I hope you pick me to win!

At age 66, I have combination skin and am a fair skinned natural red head. Thank You for all the gifts that you give to your audience on the show; someday I hope to be there and meet you in person. I'd love to try all the items but my go to is always a clean soft cotten washcloth! I can always use more since changing them at each use is important to my skin health. I worry that some of the sponges, etc could hold germs longer than a freshly washed cloth.

I went for the first time for a facial at the Haven in Rhinebeck, New York in the spring. The anesthetician recommended for my skin the clarisonic, but as I had already spent a good deal of money as a treat, I could not add this item. I have since then dreamt of owning one each time I see an add for one. I am hoping that if I do not win it, I can get one for Christmas.

I've tried many of the products listed, focusing more on the cleansing products than the "tools." At 45, I feel that the Clarisonic is the tool I need to slough off dead skin and grime gently--I have sensitive skin that is, of course, aging--to take of the "old" face and let my products do their jobs better.

Martha, what would be your choices?
We are about the same age, and we
look much younger than our age (that's
what I've been told) and I would like to keep it
this way, using good products is part of it.

I'd like to try the oscillating brush--I've been using a gardener's fingernail brush and it'd be nice to have some(thing) else do the work--and probably with a gentler touch!

I would love to try the Oscillating Brush. Sometimes I don't have the patience to spend time scrubing my face. If I had a tool, which makes it more fun and exciting, I might enjoy washing my face instead of feeling it's a chore!

I would love to try all these products, however I would really like to try the oscillating brush. I would love to pamper myself a little for my birthday which was yesterdaySunday, August 5th. I love and admire Martha Stewarts shows (i record them every day), ideas, advice, recipes, website and all with classiness. Thank you for all of it and please don't stop televising your show.

I'm entering the skin care tools giveaway because I am getting older and need some help with my facial skin care. I would love to try out the oscillating brush because my skin doctor recommended it but I couldn't afford it. The oscillating brush is made by the same mfg. that the one my doctor recommended. I would love this opportunity to give my skin and my self confidence a boost!

The Mia Sonic skin-cleansing system is something I've been wanting to try for a long time. However, I'd be sure to heed the editors' advice of using it with a gentle cleanser. It would nice to get a head start before the skin-drying weather starts!

The oscillating brush without a doubt! I've tried most of the other products - which aid in skin care... but... sloughing off that dead skin is absolutely the way to go. We dead-head plants to add new life, we trim our hair to grow stronger and longer - slough BAby!

I would love the feel of the soft brush on my face. I have very tender skin and I think this would help me to get my skin clean with out any damage or brusing.
