Skin-Tool Dos and Don'ts

A little intel about these sink-side staples will help you maximize their effectiveness -- and minimize their risks.

1. Textured Puff

Deploy only to your roughest spots (think elbows), and follow up with a moisturizer.
Gentle facial sponge, by Buf-Puf, $5.50, drugstore.com.

2. Oscillating Brush

This feels sooo good, it might encourage you to wash your face more faithfully, but pair it with a gentle cleanser and prevent overuse by following product guidelines.
Mia Sonic skin-cleansing system, $119 per set, clarisonic.com.

3. Cotton Washcloth

Martha's classic choice is ideal for most skin types -- so long as you opt for super-soft cotton and wash with a fresh, clean cloth every day.
Quick Dry washcloth, by Martha Stewart Collection, $8, macys.com.

4. Cellulose Sponge

While marketed for faces, this is too abrasive for all but the sturdiest skin. Your heels are tough, though, so try it with a scrub and go crazy on soles.
Cellulose facial sponge, by EcoTools, $3 for 3, target.com.

5. Cleansing Wipes

"These are a major convenience, but be sure to choose a noncomedogenic type to avoid risking skin flare-ups," suggests Amy Wechsler, a New York City dermatologist.
Clean & Mild makeup remover cloths, $5 for 20, olay.com.

6. Mesh Mitt

It's sold as a facial product, but Wechsler urges a strict neckdown limit to its usage. This sort of textured rubber or plastic implement and a creamy wash make for a winning combo.
Facial sponge, by Spacell, $28 for 3, blissworld.com.

7. Soft Brush

"This model is a great option for faces because its bristles are incredibly soft. It won't irritate skin or exacerbate acne," says Wechsler.
Cleansing massage brush, $25, shiseido.com.

It's a challenge to find the right product for the varied needs of aging skin. In my mid-50's, I'd like to try using the soft facial brush or oscillating brush to smooth out dry areas on my face. However, I hadn't thought about using cellulose pads for rough feet ... what a great idea!

They all sound like fun to try, so I would like to sample them all. If I must choose only one then perhaps the oscillating brush since I have never used one of those. If Martha Stewart recommends these products, then I trust they will all be excellent! Thank you! And I hope you pick me to win!

At age 66, I have combination skin and am a fair skinned natural red head. Thank You for all the gifts that you give to your audience on the show; someday I hope to be there and meet you in person. I would love to try the Oscillating Brush! Looks like it would be a fun/tingly experience.

I would try the cellulose sponge because I have horribly dry calloused heels!

  • Alexis88883 13 Aug, 2012

I'd love to try all the items but my go to is always a clean soft cotten washcloth! I can always use more since changing them at each use is important to my skin health. I worry that some of the sponges, etc could hold germs longer than a freshly washed cloth.

  • Dianne Lederman 13 Aug, 2012

I would pick the oscillating brush. My daughter has trouble with acne and I would give it to her.

  • Stephanie Saenz 13 Aug, 2012

  • dcb1jcb2 13 Aug, 2012

  • DawnFilmProf 13 Aug, 2012

The Mia Sonic skin-cleansing system, I'd love to test this skin-freshening wisdom. And I'd savor a slough with a new textured puff, while a mesh mitt's a ticket to bliss-dom.

  • DawnFilmProf 13 Aug, 2012

The Mia Sonic skin-cleansing system, I'd love to test this skin-freshening wisdom. And I'd savor a slough with a new textured puff, while a mesh mitt's a ticket to bliss-dom.

  • SarahObregon 13 Aug, 2012

Brushes, sponges, and puffs...oh my!!! The soft brush for the face sounds DIVINE!!! Facial skin is so very delicate and yet requires a thorough cleansing to keep it healthy and glowing. Sounds like the soft brush fits the bill to a T! Do you hear that little bird whispering in your ear to give it to me??! :)

  • jill hess 13 Aug, 2012

I would like to use the soft facial brush. I think it would really make my skin clean, yet not damage it.

  • zajac 11 Aug, 2012

I went for the first time for a facial at the Haven in Rhinebeck, New York in the spring. The anesthetician recommended for my skin the clarisonic, but as I had already spent a good deal of money as a treat, I could not add this item. I have since then dreamt of owning one each time I see an add for one. I am hoping that if I do not win it, I can get one for Christmas.

  • Vee 10 Aug, 2012

The Oscillating brush looks like something your face could fall in love with. It would possibly feel like an incredible neck-rub for your face!

They all look so great. I used to pamper myself more, but it has been awhile. i will lo try the oscillating facial brush!!

  • MNMeg 10 Aug, 2012

I've tried many of the products listed, focusing more on the cleansing products than the "tools." At 45, I feel that the Clarisonic is the tool I need to slough off dead skin and grime gently--I have sensitive skin that is, of course, aging--to take of the "old" face and let my products do their jobs better.

  • gmamma7 9 Aug, 2012

All of the products looks so useful. Being sixty two and having skin that is sensitive, I would like to try all but would focus on the clarisonic. It looks the most inviting.

  • Claudia Ellis911 9 Aug, 2012

Unfortuantely. I was a sun lover in my youth. Now in my 60's,I am paying the price. Any product that would help would be appreciated. The oscillating brush sounds interesting and I would probably never be able to spend that amount at this time.

  • mlb1pansy 8 Aug, 2012

    All the products sound fabulous,
I would love to try all of them...
my 1st choice is the oscillating brush,
    also a very good moisturiser.
Martha, what would be your choices?
We are about the same age, and we
look much younger than our age (that's
what I've been told) and I would like to keep it
this way, using good products is part of it.

    Thanks Martha

  • Chesloksue 8 Aug, 2012

The soft brush would be ideal for me. At my age I need some tenderness!

  • KML007 7 Aug, 2012

I have always wanted an oscillating brush! The sonicare ones are so pricey though.

I'd like to try the oscillating brush--I've been using a gardener's fingernail brush and it'd be nice to have some(thing) else do the work--and probably with a gentler touch!

The Mesh Mit and the Oscillating Brush look awesome! I hope I can try all of the products! Thanks

  • Annie19 7 Aug, 2012

The amazing Clarisonic is on the top of my wish list!

  • Samez101 7 Aug, 2012

The oscillating brush looks like a spa treat at home.

  • karissamarie 7 Aug, 2012

The soft brush! Cleansing massage brush by Shiseido...I like that it's more geared towards sensitive skin. :)

  • Dianny 6 Aug, 2012

Oh the oscillating brush looks great, I've always wanted to try one!

  • CiCi3 6 Aug, 2012

I would so enjoy trying the soft brush....what a delightful collection of skin care tools!

  • hidjmt 6 Aug, 2012

I would love to try the soft brush, a small piece of wonderful that would be easy to travel with and wouldn't take up much space but could have a HUGE impact on my skin :)

  • Incurubes 6 Aug, 2012

I am very interested in trying the Clarisonic Oscillating Brush. I've heard excellent feedback from some people about it. Thanks :)

  • Victoria Jeskey 6 Aug, 2012

The Clarisonic Oscilating brush. It sounds so pampering...ohhhhhhh

  • magazinelover28 6 Aug, 2012

I would love to try the Oscillating Brush. Sometimes I don't have the patience to spend time scrubing my face. If I had a tool, which makes it more fun and exciting, I might enjoy washing my face instead of feeling it's a chore!

  • Ali S 6 Aug, 2012

I would love to try all these products, however I would really like to try the oscillating brush. I would love to pamper myself a little for my birthday which was yesterdaySunday, August 5th. I love and admire Martha Stewarts shows (i record them every day), ideas, advice, recipes, website and all with classiness. Thank you for all of it and please don't stop televising your show.

I would like to try the osculating brush. I would like to try and bring some youth into my face by exfoliating and deep cleansing. I have heard much about this product and would love to try it.

  • JennGM 5 Aug, 2012

The Oscillating brush I've heard so much about, so that would be what I would like, but my second choice would be the soft brush.

  • heatherosejansen 5 Aug, 2012

I'd like to try to the mesh mitt and soft brush!

  • Jmarcopolo 5 Aug, 2012

I had something similar to the oscillating brush when I was younger and loved it! I would love to have one again. It is like a massage while washing your face!

  • Kmc897 5 Aug, 2012

I've been wanting to try an oscillating brush for a while, I've heard great things. But I haven't been able to commit yet...

  • Betsy Easley 5 Aug, 2012

The oscillating brush is my top pick. I think it would clean my skin much more effictively than I'm cleaning it now.

  • lkcrazy 4 Aug, 2012

I'm entering the skin care tools giveaway because I am getting older and need some help with my facial skin care. I would love to try out the oscillating brush because my skin doctor recommended it but I couldn't afford it. The oscillating brush is made by the same mfg. that the one my doctor recommended. I would love this opportunity to give my skin and my self confidence a boost!

  • Gluten Free Yogi 4 Aug, 2012

I'd be interested in trying out the oscillating brush too!

  • Librarian2 4 Aug, 2012

Hi! I too have entered menopause and feel as though my skin thinks that it is 12 years old again ! I have been desperately trying to find a beauty regiment for this new and INTERESTING time in my life

  • elwalker 4 Aug, 2012

I would love to see if the Mia lives up to all the hype. It's definitely high on my list of must try beauty products.

  • tsolmst3k 3 Aug, 2012

The Mia Sonic skin-cleansing system is something I've been wanting to try for a long time. However, I'd be sure to heed the editors' advice of using it with a gentle cleanser. It would nice to get a head start before the skin-drying weather starts!

  • littleperch 3 Aug, 2012

I would love the oscillating brush! I've heard so many great things about them!

  • HoBo48 3 Aug, 2012

The oscillating brush without a doubt! I've tried most of the other products - which aid in skin care... but... sloughing off that dead skin is absolutely the way to go. We dead-head plants to add new life, we trim our hair to grow stronger and longer - slough BAby!

  • Stanz 3 Aug, 2012

I would love the feel of the soft brush on my face. I have very tender skin and I think this would help me to get my skin clean with out any damage or brusing.
