Tiered Vellum Lampshade

  • 1 roll medium-weight vellum, Vidalon vellum (No. 10521-9000), by Canson, from Blick Art Materials, 800-828-4548 or
  • Cutting mat
  • Craft knife
  • Nonskid ruler
  • Translucent-parchment cube shade
  • Horn folder (S117-H), from John Neal Booksellers, 800-369-9598 or
  • Hand punch, 3/16-inch square (No. 2358), by Fiskars, from Craft Town Hobby Land USA,
  • Sobo craft glue

  1. Step 1

To make tiers, lay vellum on mat, and use knife and ruler to cut strips 2 inches tall and 1 inch longer than shade's perimeter. To gauge the number of strips needed, subtract 2 inches from height of shade, divide by 1.5, and round up.

  2. Step 2

With bone folder, score strips at 2-inch intervals; accordion-fold to create squares.

  3. Step 3

Measure 1/2 inch up and 1/2 inch in from bottom right corner. Connect marks with pencil; cut along line to remove corner. Repeat on bottom left.

  4. Step 4

Punch holes 1/4 inch up from bottom center of squares. Unfold.

  5. Step 5

To attach tiers, glue end of 1 strip to corner of shade, aligning bottoms; let dry.

  6. Step 6

Wrap strip around shade, and attach other end with glue. Trim excess. Repeat, overlapping scallop on strip below. To stagger, trim 1 inch off starting end of every other strip; trim top strip for fit.
