How-To

Paper Butterflies

These winged insects, attached to wires, flutter around the hydrangea arrangements.

Tools and Materials

  • Butterfly craft punches, in 2 sizes: Large Monarch butterfly punch, and Classic butterfly punch, both by Martha Stewart Crafts, from Michaels
  • Text-weight paper, in different colors: Astrobright text paper, in Re-Entry Red, and matte text paper, in Peony and Firecracker Red, all from paperpresentation.com
  • Floral wire (or another sturdy, thin wire)
  • Double-sided tape

Paper Butterflies How-To

1. Using the craft punches and paper, cut out several butterfly shapes.

2. Cut 10-inch lengths of wire. With a small piece of tape, secure the tip of 1 wire to the back of 1 butterfly. Repeat to attach wires to more butterflies. Stick any remaining butterflies to the edges of pails using bits of tape.

I think you'll find these butterfly cutters at Michael's now.. I picked one up and made this pretty Butterfly Shadow Box.. definitely fun and so easy to make. It would be a lovely gift for Mother's Day. http://justasmidgen.com/2013/04/14/all-a-flutter-for-spring/

I need the template for the Simple Paper Butterfly Mobile. It has a video tutorial on this site but no access to the template.

When I 1st read about this craft I was so sad that I couldn't do it! I had none of the materials, but I was making multiple vases of our roses + I wanted some extra pop in my flowers. I had some beading wire on hand and hot pink computer paper so I folded the paper in half, free drew half a very small butterfly and cut. You'll want to 2 of the some butterflies for attaching it to the wire, one w/ double sided tape, center the wire, + place the other butterfly on top, it totally works w/o tools.
