Fabric-Topped Box

Introduction

To create streamlined organizers, we used men's cotton suiting fabric in a limited range of colored stripes to cover the tops of these boxes. Follow the same instructions to adorn boxes in other prints and patterns, such as florals, polka dots, or gingham, to suit your style.

Materials

  • Storage box with lid
  • Striped cotton shirting fabric, similar cotton shirting, from New York Elegant Fabrics, 212-302-4980.
  • Iron
  • Fusible webbing

Steps

  1. Step 1

Prepare fabric: measure the length and width of the lid; add the height of lid plus 1/2 inch to each measurement, and cut a piece of shirting fabric to these dimensions. Press fusible webbing to the wrong side of fabric, following manufacturer's instructions; trim excess.

  2. Step 2

Cover lid: peel off paper backing and center fabric on lid. Press, following manufacturer's instructions.

  3. Step 3

Cut a notch in each corner of fabric, as shown (the corner of each notch should be 1/4 inch from the corner of lid). Fold and press 1 side, then its opposite; repeat for remaining corners.

  4. Step 4

Fold edges inside lid and adhere to the underside of lid with the tip of iron.
