Beaded Barrettes and Headband How-To
1. To make flowers: Cut a 12-inch length of 28-gauge nickel wire. Thread 20 seed beads onto middle of wire, then use pliers to bend and loop wire to make a petal. Thread 20 more beads, and loop again. Repeat until you have five petals. Thread 1 larger bead onto one end of the wire. Fan petals around bead, and thread wire through petals to secure. Use remaining wire to attach flower to curve of a bobby pin. Trim excess wire.
2. To make headband: Glue thin ribbon to one end of a metal or plastic headband. Wrap the ribbon around the band as shown, overlapping as you go. Add flowers, twisting excess wire around band; use ribbon to hide wire. Glue ribbon in place at the end.
3. Following the technique used for the flowers, create four wings, making sure the two front ones are larger (40 beads versus 25). For the body, fold an 8-inch piece of wire in half. Thread 1 seed bead so it falls at the fold. Squeezing the two halves together, thread 13 seed beads over the doubled wire. Curve the two ends to form antennae (as shown), tucking wires' loose ends back into the body, and trimming as needed. Attach body to wings by wrapping a separate 5-inch piece of wire around middle of the wings and the body at the fourth or fifth bead from top. Trim. Use remaining wire to attach butterfly to curve of a bobby pin or a headband, as described in previous slide.
