Project

Faux-Agate Pendant

Earn your Girl Scout jewelry badge by creating an affordable clay replica of the colorful crystalline mineral.

Materials

  • 1 pack translucent polymer clay
  • 1 pack white polymer clay
  • Coarse and fine kitchen graters
  • 3 packs polymer clay in colors of choice
  • Clay roller (craft "pasta" machine) or rolling pin
  • Clay slicer ("tissue" blade)
  • Wax paper
  • Small stirrer-size straw
  • Aluminum foil
  • Sandpaper
  • Paper towels
  • High-gloss enamel spray
  • Leather cord

Steps

  1. Step 1

Place translucent and white clays in freezer for 1 hour. Grate 1 pack cold translucent clay on a coarse grater. Grate 1/4 pack cold white clay with fine grater.

  2. Step 2

While still cold, sprinkle grated white clay onto grated translucent clay. Let clay warm to room temperature; press into a log about 1 inch thick by 2 1/2 inches long.

  3. Step 3

Form 1/4 pack colored clay into ball. Mix 1/4 pack of the same colored clay with 1/8 pack white clay. Repeat with 2 other colors.

  4. Step 4

Roll each ball of colored clay through a clay roller.Tip: If you don't have a clay roller, you can also flatten clay by covering with wax paper and using a rolling pin.

  5. Step 5

Wrap each layer of clay once around the white/translucent log. Squeeze with hands so all layers stick together.

  6. Step 6

Use a clay slicer to slice 1/4-inch thick pieces as straight as possible. (One log will yield about 10 pendants.)Tip: To create different-shaped pendants, press or roll clay log before making the next slice.

  7. Step 7

After slicing, sandwich clay in wax paper and flatten to an even thickness. Use a straw to poke a hole at the top of the pendant.

  8. Step 8

Sandwich pendants in aluminum foil and place in preheated 275 degree oven for 15 minutes. Immediately drop pendants into ice water to cool.

  9. Step 9

Smooth with sandpaper, then wipe clean with wet paper towel.

  10. Step 10

Spray with gloss enamel; let dry.

  11. Step 11

    String leather cord through hole.
