Photographer William Abranowicz shot the images in this story last summer at Pine Island Camp, a boys' camp in central Maine. Founded in 1902, Pine Island remains much the same a century later -- there's no electricity or running water, and boys spend days hiking, canoeing, and learning outdoor survival skills. "Kids learn about the natural world and how to count on each other there," says Abranowicz, whose two sons attended the camp for several years. "I have often said that if there is any hope for the world, it will come out of the values learned at a place like Pine Island."
