All you need is patience and a steady hand. Begin by brushing on two coats of mascara: “This creates a shelf for fake lashes to rest on,” says Kimberly Soane, director of global artistry for Bobbi Brown. To achieve a more natural effect, opt for individual lashes instead of a full strip, and attach three to four singletons at the outer edges. “Place the false lashes between your own,” she explains. “Once the glue has dried, apply two coats of mascara to help them blend in.” At the end of the night, gently de-stick falsies with an oil-based eye-makeup remover.

It’s not as hard as it might seem. “You’ll need one light and one medium-dark shadow in a gray or slate color,” says Soane. And be sure to have two separate shadow brushes so you’re not unintentionally transferring pigment.

Instead of choosing a concealer that’s one shade lighter than your foundation, select one that matches exactly so it blends seamlessly. Look for a formula that has light-reflective pigments and optical diffusers like Origins Quick, Hide! Long-Wearing Concealer ($15, origins.com). Apply your foundation before the concealer to gauge how much coverage you’ll really need and avoid caking on unnecessary product.

To make eyes look bright and well-rested, highlight them with a shimmering shadow, says makeup artist Lauren Gott. Sweep it on lids, staying close to the lash line. Wiggle color around the inner corner of eyes to “open them up,” says Gott, but avoid applying iridescent shadow near the brow bone -- it can reflect too much light and make skin seem shiny.

Well-defined arches sharpen your appearance without adding any makeup, so it’s worth paying a professional to groom your brows before a big event. Skip waxing, which can tug or even tear skin, and try a technique like threading, which uses a thin filament to extract hairs that tweezers normally miss. You can’t go wrong with basic black and brown, but an unexpected flourish of color can really enhance eyes. Rich violet liners work well with hazel, green or light brown eyes by adding contrast without being overly garish; dark navy hues intensify pale blue and gray eyes; and forest greens highlight amber flecks in the irises of deep brown eyes. Soane suggests using gel and liquid formulas, which can wear for up to eight hours depending on the brand. “If you have a hard time working with gels, sweep a matching powder shadow over the liner once you’re done and gently smudge it. This will soften any bumps or imperfections,” she says.
