Portable Potting Bench

Houseplant maintenance can be dirty work, inevitably involving the spreading out of newspaper and vacuuming up of soil. Borrow this trick from our gardening editors: Use a broad, shallow plastic bin as a portable potting bench. You can do all your fertilizing and repotting within its confines, containing any mess. Afterward, dump the excess dirt and store supplies (extra pots, stakes, potting mix, gravel) right inside.

I keep my potting soil in a large, fairly shallow "Rubbermaid" bin. I can re-pot plants right over the soil. Additionally the lid, when flipped over, serves as more workspace. And the whole mess can be quickly put away.
