We used two 20-inch square papers to create a dramatic large star, but you can choose squares of any size to create smaller stars.
Tools and Materials
- Cutting mat
- Craft knife
- 2 large pieces of watercolor paper
- Bone folder
- Kraft paper
- Spray adhesive
- Silver fine glitter
- Silver glass glitter (optional)
- Spray sealant, such as Rust-Oleum Gloss Clear spray
- Hot-glue gun
- Ribbon for hanging
How to Make the Astronomical Accent
- Measure and cut the watercolor paper to make two 20-inch squares. Use a bone folder to fold 1 square as shown in this diagram; in the last step, measure four inches up from center and mark a line to each corner and cut along that line. Unfold shape; it will be a star. Repeat to create a second star.
- Protect your work surface with kraft paper. Coat each star with spray adhesive, then replace kraft paper with a fresh sheet. Apply a coating of fine glitter; if desired, respray, and add a topping of glass glitter (changing kraft paper again) for added texture and sparkle.
- Spray each star with sealant. Let dry. Print templates for supports. Trace onto watercolor paper, and cut out; hot-glue supports into place as shown on the diagram on the template printout.
- Position 1 star on top of the other to create an 8-point star.
I have to tell you, I made this and I'm so proud of how it looks (I just used 2 12x12 silver glitter scrapbook sheets, no measuring, perfect squares!) that I show it to everyone who walks into my house! I love all types of paper stars. Many years ago, Martha had a five pointed modular star in her magazine. I wish I could find those directions.
