Monogram Pumpkin Vase How-To

  1. To make a template, photocopy a monogram you have drawn or put together from photocopies of letters you like. Enlarge to a size appropriate for your pumpkin.
  2. To prepare pumpkin, cut holes in both top and bottom with keyhole saw, remove seeds, and thin flesh as described in Basic Carving Techniques.
  3. Tape monogram template to pumpkin. Using an awl or T-pin, transfer the design, carefully marking corners. Remove photocopy. Use miniature saw to cut along outline made by holes, cutting all the way through flesh.
  4. Light pumpkin with string lights wrapped around a jar. Even out light by tacking a sheet of waxed paper over inside of monogram. Position pumpkin over jar, and insert branches as desired (bittersweet branches and pear leaves are shown here).
