Owl Night Watchers

A pair of wide-eyed owls guard the front door.

To make their perches, you need only a few bare branches from a crafts store or your own yard. Paint the branches black and wedge them into place.

  • Night Watchers Template
  • Scissors
  • Pencil
  • Black card stock or poster board
  • Masking tape
  • Wooden paint stirrers (one for each owl)

  1. Step 1

Use a photocopier to enlarge the owl template to desired size. Cut out and trace onto black card stock or poster board (flip template for second owl to make a symmetrical pair).

  2. Step 2

Cut out owl shapes, including eyes.

  3. Step 3

Tape a paint stirrer to the back of each owl; tape owls to windows on either side of door.

I made the owls out of cardstock and lamented to weather proof it. I added yellow behind the eyes to add to the effect. They came out great. I spray painted black willow twigs for the owls to perch on.

How do you get those tree branches mounted to stay up like that?

You can always make them out of wood!

All you need to weather proof your Owls is a clear spray on paint sealer, or go to your local Office Depot store and they can lament them for you and they will cut them out for you or you cut them out.

In response to aaron350 -- craft foam could be used instead of poster board or poster board could be sandwiched between clear contact paper to make the decorations more weatherproof.

Those of us living in the Northeast will need to find weatherproof materials to make these, as well as the other outdoor crafting ideas for Halloween.
