Green Parakeets

Martha Stewart Living Television

Did you know that all parakeets were originally green? Native to Australia, these popular pets were first domesticated hundreds of years ago, and the blue and yellow feathers that many parakeets have today are the result of selective breeding: In the parakeet's natural habitat, any deviation from green made them easy targets for predators, so it wasn't until they were successfully raised as pets that mutations in color were passed down through generations.
