If you have an ink-jet color printer, you can pull off this project. It's especially fun to do with kids (just be sure you handle the knife yourself).

Bottle in the Sand Postcard Clip Art
Embellishments, such as shells, sand, net onion bag, and glitter (optional)
Postcard How-To
1. Print postcard design (Bottle in the Sand, Crab, Beach Balls, Blossom, Ice Pops) on card stock. Use bone folder to score along dotted line; fold. Apply glue to 1 half; press halves together. Rub to remove air pockets. Let dry.
2. Cut out image. For the sea-themed cards, snip along edges of images with small, sharp scissors. For the classic rectangular ones, align a ruler with each side, and cut with craft knife.
3. Add details: glue a shell or a sprinkle of sand to the bottle, or a scrap of an onion bag to the crab for a net. Glue glitter to the fish or any card that needs some sparkle.

The directions look complete to me - you print it up, cut it out, glue it in half and then embellish. The sand needs to be glued to the card - the post office didn't need to be rude for sure, but the way the mail gets handled by machines and people you definitely do not want loose sand in the envelope. Hope this helps. Fun idea!! Thanks Martha & Crew!

Did anyone mail these? I just got booted out of the post office trying to mail these as the sand leaking out of the glassine envelopes can be misconstrued as anthrax threat. I just got some packing tape to seal all the way around the glassine envelope to ensure no sand leaking, but since they can see through it, I don't know if it will be accepted if I go back to the post office. Didn't help that the post office worker was so rude about it.

i FIND THE INSTRUCTIONS INCOMPLETE. AFTER YOU PRINT, GLUE AND CUT...THEN WHAT? tHERE ARE NO INSTRUCTIONS ON HOW TO PROCEED AND ACTUALLY MAKE THE CARD. THIS HELD TRUE FOR THE MESSAGE IN A BOTTLE CARD. WHAT PLASTIC BAG DO YOU PUT IT IN? DO WE REALLY NEED TO PURCHASE A BONE PRESS OR A FINE CUTTING KNIFE? MARTHA, THERE ARE NO DIAGRAMS, LIKE THE ONES FOUND IN SIMPLE ORIGAMI SITES WHICH GUIDE THE CRAFTER IN MAKING THE CRAFT. THIS WHOLE CONCEPT IS LACKING. SORRY!
