Creamy Salad Dressing Base

One smooth, tangy base can be transformed into six different dressings.   • 1 cup buttermilk
  • 1/2 cup sour cream
  • 1/4 cup mayonnaise
  • Mix-in
  • Coarse salt and ground pepper


  1. In a medium bowl, whisk together buttermilk, sour cream, and mayonnaise until smooth. Whisk in desired mix-in. Season to taste with salt and pepper.

Cook's Note

Refrigerate the dressing base in an airtight container, up to 2 weeks, before adding mix-ins. For a lower-fat version, replace the sour cream with low-fat plain Greek yogurt.
