Preheat oven to 375 degrees. Cream butter until smooth; add sugars, and beat until smooth. Beat in eggs and vanilla. Into a large bowl, sift together dry ingredients. Slowly beat dry ingredients into wet mixture. Fold in chocolate chips.
Drop 2 to 3 tablespoons dough per cookie onto ungreased baking sheets; space dough at least 2 inches apart to allow for spreading. Bake until golden, 8 to 10 minutes. Remove cookies from baking sheets, and allow to cool on baking racks.
If cookies harden before you have a chance to remove them from the baking sheet, return the sheet to the oven for a few seconds to soften the dough for easier removal.
On "Martha Bakes," Martha used 2 cups of chocolate chips in this recipe. She chilled the dough for 1 hour and baked the cookies for 10 to 12 minutes, rotating the pan halfway through baking time.
This is the Gold Standard for chocolate chip cookies. I love crispy, rich tasting cookies and this one is everything you have ever dreamed of. Sometimes I add chopped toasted pecans. If you are looking for the perfect cookie, this is it.
I had watched the Martha Bakes episode where she made all these cookies so I knew what to expect; when I made them they came out just like they were supposed to, a thinner type of cookie with a slightly crispy outside and a soft, chewy center.
I follow the recipe exactly as the recipe stated with the additions of Martha's tips on the show. The cookies were beautiful. Flat, crispy and tasted lovely. My only complaint is how greasy your hand are after touching the cookie. It even leaves greasy marks on the paper it sits on. That makes the recipe a "no go" for me. I don't feel i could serve it to time!
Chilling is a must. They didn't work for me until I chilled the dough. I used an ice cream scoop like Martha did and they are huge. I tried making them smaller but that batch burned and fell apart. Made again with scoop and watched until middle was set, pull out and let rest on cookie sheet for 5 minutes. Remove to cool...Crispy and divine! The taste is perfection!
My husband was watching from the bedrooom and shouted out to me "Get that recipe!" so I did! I'm not interested in the nutritional content or calories--besides, Martha's recipe for Mac 'n' Cheese is the BEST, and I don't even want to KNOW the nutritional content of THAT---it doesn't matter! Life is too short to not eat comfort food.
very flat cookie not like the picture at all. Not my favorite of recipes because of this something must be wrong in the ingredient measurements here. Oh well I'm sure they will still get eaten anyway who doesn't love choc. chips
They ARE good....but flat as a flitter. Was making them to give as Christmas gifts and I still will. At least they will know they're homemade!
This recipe made the perfect chocolate chip cookie! Thank you Martha and Alexis.
Love these cookies- my mother and I make them every year when I come home for the holidays. My only suggestion would be to chill the dough for 30 mins to 1 hour after mixing it. The dough can be a little gloppy at room temperature and it gets messy.
Forget to mention that the picture shown does not look like the cookie..they are a very thin.. flat ...crunchy and chewy at the same time....they should change the picture.
These are my favorite Choc chip cookie...i use dk br sugar instead of the lt and started using a smaller ice cr scoop to get more cookies. But the large cookies are very impressive !! Either way they are delish!!
So what if you eat 6 cookies life is too short go for run tomorrow. nine times out of 10 the salad dressing you pour over your salad is more calories! I'm making these tonight!
These are the BEST Chocolate Chip Cookies EVER. Do NOT count calories, there's no point. It's a lot. Don't eat them everyday, and go for a run.
What is the deal with everyone wanting to know the nutritional content of everything anymore? Get up off your backside, do some cardio, lift some weights, and then you can have a cookie or two. NOT 6!!
Why would anyone want to be bothered to know "The Nutritional Content of a CHOCOLATE CHIP COOKIE???????
where can one find the nutrition content of each recipe??
where can one find the nutrition content of each recipe??
The best ever!
i just baked half the recipe which is far away from the picture puplished here, they came out sooo flat even though the taste was great , next time i will try to add more flour or less butter may be...
These are the PERFECT cookie! I've used it over and over; this time, I didn't use choc. chips but used toffee chips instead...WOW!!! I've used dark brown sugar before and they were great - and I used salted butter too and used the salt called for in the recipe...it was fine and was NOT salty! You have to have a little salt in all things sweet!!!
These cookies were so thin I could barely pull them off the parchment paper and they fall apart. I would definitely add more flour or add some oats to the dough next time. I really like the brown sugar flavor.
I made 1/4 the recipe the other night to try them out. They're great! My husband loved them. I did the usual high altitude adjustments (we live in the front range of CO), decreased sugar 2 T. per cup
I would love to try using pudding in a cookie mix like 'Master Cookie Baker' Mykele has suggested. Can she share a recipe with MS? I like to experiment but need an ingredients list! I love to bake from scratch, using my Grandmother's recipies and am now teaching my Grandchildren the joys of baking!

Anything with so much buttrer will not firmup like recipes that
have shortening or shortening plus some of the butter. I
found that making chocolate chip cookies with more
body and still be chewy could be done by just
adding a package of instant pudding...vanilla of
course worked beautifully. I did decrease the
sugar by about 1/4 cup but that even is not
necessary. Unless I am making short bread or
spritz cookies I avoid butter or at least pair
it with shortening.

I am a master cookie baker.
These cookies are a family favorite for sure. However, I always add appx 1/4 cup of quick oats to the recipe. It helps them not spread out as much and it adds a wonderful chewy texture to them. I've tried them both ways and like them with the oats better. It's a personal choice! I also bake them for appx 9 minutes and let them cool slightly on the pan before moving them to the cooling rack. The picture is not what the cookies look like either. This recipe makes very thin cookies.
i thaught the cookies were good!!!!!!!!!!!
I loved this recipe and definitely read comments here-they help! I did add 1/2 cup more flour so they wouldn't spread so much. I also used a 1/4 cup scoop to make each cookie and baked them for 13min. Use parchment paper to move cookies over to drying rack-only way to do it! Add 1/2 cup more choc chips if you have extra. My cookies turned out looking pretty-think it was the added flour that lightened the color. Please add comments after you try a recipe with tips to help out people like me!
very good, I looked for this recipe in her new cookie cookbook, only the picture was there, the recipe was completely different!
My oven doesn't heat uniformly, so the first batch left cookies with a crisp edge but a soft center. I found using a darker baking sheet, "patting" the cookie dough ball down a tad, and turning the cookie sheet in the oven about halfway into baking made the difference. I also only dropped 1 tablespoon of dough per cookie on the sheet. They truly are yummy!
They look like a mistake but they taste great. They are as flat as flat can get. I am taking them to a meeting tomorrow night with college student. I will let them be the judges. My husband liked them and I like the taste. I made them on parchment paper, took the trays out of the oven and slid the paper off the tray on to the cooling racks.
This is my all time favorite of all chocolate chip cookies recipes and is fantastic!!!Grocery stores should remove the "Famous Amos" chocolate chip cookies and replace them with these!
These cookies are awesome! Mine came out as "squares" tho, when they ran together. Loved the unusual shape. Plan to make these as my birthday "treat" and take them into work. Soooo yummy!!
This cookie was presented on Style today. They are suppose to be flat. They look absolutely devine!!! I would love to have a cooking lesson with Martha!!! I will let you know how mine come out!!! Thank you Martha, you are grand!
I just baked a batch and the cookies turned out thin and dark, unlike the picture depicted. Also, the edges were crispy but the centre was rather chewy, which is strange considering the cookie was so flat. Did anyone experience this??
I've made these many times, so decided to comment. I have occasionally try different recipes, but always come back to this version. They are hands down my favorite and everyone in the family loves them. I make them a little smaller, usually add nuts, and freeze them in small batches. Yes, it's a pound of butter, but it's a treat, not intended as a meal! The recipe makes a lot.
Oh yes, 4 C of sugar, 1 lb butter-how about getting a fatter behind from all those calories??
Gracias
I love the thin and crisp over thick and chewy. Really good.
These are very good cookies. I like crispy thin cookies and these do the trick. I could eat them mindlessly. They are not a very attractive cookie though. They are thin and dark and don't "looK" too appetizing. I think the picture given with this recipe is deceiving. The correct look of the cookie should be in place of it. I ended up adding more flour to half my recipe. I was making a bunch of cookies for my school's open house and I don't think anyone would have eaten the flat crispy ones.
Very crispy and excellent taste. Kids love them, I bake them in big batches for bake sales, the office, parties, etc. They are the first cookie to always disappear before all the others. Thanks Alexis.
I made these cookies a few years ago sooooo goood they are crispy. I looked everywhere for the recipe I new they where Alexis', I'm so glad I found it again.
I have to agree with marthawannabe2u about the daughter-demeanor.....sad to say...but I will try the cookies!
I am ok with Martha trying to work her daughter into her business. I would much rather read something that Alexis has done. However, to listen to her on Sirius is more than I can take, she is so obnoxious, and I cannot stand her. In my humble opinion, she discredits her Mothern n n n n n s work, with her behavior. This recipe sounds good, I am glad it is in written form!
Ooh, cookie baking and a good grammar fight! Two of my favorite things.
Sunny Rae is correct (go English majors!) Words or names that are singular in form but happen to end in "s" are made possessive by adding a " 's " at the end. Example: Alexis's cookies, Jess's brownies, etc. Words or names that are plural and end in "s" are made possessive simply by adding a " ' " to the end. Example: The Stewarts' house, the pans' box.
Ok, sorry to jump off topic there... had to add my two cents!
I AM an English major and "Alexis's" is correct.
Alexanana, there must have been something wrong with your ingredients. Alexis's recipe has all the ingredients of classic chocolate chip cookies--hard to go wrong with that.
thank you for the recipe ,
Gissie
YUK, these are the worst! what a waste of good ingredients, threw them out will not make again
I just whipped up a batch with the KitchenAid mixer I got for Christmas. Why, they practically make themselves!
My family loved these!
These cookies are THE BEST. Thank you Martha. I've made them numerous times and every time they disappear extremely quick and whoever tries them always asks for the recipe. They're meant to be flat - just put "small" amounts - you'll get lots out of the batch.
These cookies are awesome, but I thought i had done something wrong. Glad to know that I had not. They are very very flat. They are good raw(sorry I love raw cookie dough) and cooked. My friends love making them with me.
you might also check out: Jaques Torres's site listed as mrchocolate.com
These cookies are flat and spread like crazy, although they are tasty. For a more traditional cookie recipe try Jaques Torres's Secret Chocolate Chip Cookies, found on this site. They are wonderful! According to The Elements of Style by Strunk and White, Alexis's is the correct way to write the possessive singular of Alexis.
if you add about 1/4 to 1/2 cup flour extra they don't run as much and still come out pretty flat!
Who cares about the english lesson..........this is about wonderful cookies....m'dear!
Fabulous recipe!
BTW, a note to LoringLady: recheck your grammar source, m'dear. Bedford 36a/Hodges' 15a states: Singular possessive
The possessive form of a singular noun is an apostrophe followed by the letter "s", i.e: Kramer's hair; words ending with s, z or x generally omit the "s", i.e: Dr. Seuss' sense of humor THAT is 'basic 5th grade English'. ;-)
This is the best cookie recipe ever.. I've been using it for about six years!
Basic 5th grade English, she is showing possession, not plural. The cookies are named in honor of Alexis. Therefore they are Alexis's cookies.
Wouldn't the plural of Alexis be Alexis' not Alexis's? I'm no english major but it just doesn't look right.
Hi,
Well just made these cookies and I must say they are a labor of love... The 2 to 3 tbs per cookie, is waaaay to much in my opinion.. They all run together and create a kind of brownie like thing....I found myself carving out rounds in order for them to look like a cookie.... Lots of work I thought... That being said we will wait and see how they are received. Also wait to remove from cookie sheet at least 3 minutes.......They will not come off smoothly if you don't...
I have been making these cookies for years - I originally found the recipe in Martha's "Entertaining" book. They are excellent! I also recommend letting the cookies cool a bit before removing them to a cooling rack. Also make sure your cookie sheet has cooled between batches so they don't run "too fast".
After very carefully measuring, creaming and mixing the cookies, my first batch was a TOTAL FAILURE! As one of the other people comment, the cookies spread all over the pan and were a total mess. I felt I had too much money, time and effort in the project, so added more flour and the rest look somewhat better, however I will pitch this recipe. I was quite disappointed, usually having perfect results from other recipes from this site. I would only say beware.
Would they work good to use to make ice cream sanwiches?
These are our favorite chocolate chip cookie. If you like thin and crispy, this one is for you. Try leaving them on the cookie sheet for 1 minute before removing to cooling rack. This way they don't mush together. They are almost like a lace cookie, and as such, should be handles the same way.
These are my favorite chocolate cookies. I made them quite a few times a year as I get many requests from friends and coworkers for them.
Different strokes! I always make a small batch to test a recipe. My dear Mother used to crave cookies like this. More like a candy/cookie. The picture is NOT of these cookies. These are FLAT. Go for the 10 min bake to get the full taffy like hot and crisp cool cookie. They are good. They are large. Leave on the sheet until they can be taken off without breaking them.
I made these cookies and was really disappointed. I thought the sugar/flour ratio was way off but made them anyway. They spread out too much and was just a mess. I really hate to waste a whole pound of expensive butter!
These are the best cookies ever! I make them several times a year and my family asks for them even more often. I make a double batch, make it into logs and freeze it so I can always have these cookies when I want them! They ARE that good!
This is the best chocolate chip cookie I have ever tasted. I made them using a hand mixer but I strongly recommend using a stand mixer. The recipe makes a lot of cookies so there's a lot of cookie dough. You could make half if you wanted.
These are by far my family's favorite recipe for Chocolate Chip cookies! They disappear so fast from the cookie jar. I use a 1/4 c. scoop to make it really easy.
Excellent cookies, we all loved them. I only put 1 1/2 tb. on the cookies sheet for each cookie which made 6. It worked out well for me. It also took 14 mintues to bake.
Everyone loves these cookies. A colleagues of mine said he'd kill for them ;)
