Black or brown gel paste food coloring
-
3 1/2-inch lady bug-shaped Chocolate Cookie Cutouts
-
2 large silver dragees
-
Black or brown sanding sugar
-
Bright red or bright pink gel paste food coloring
-
White dragees or white fruit imperial candies
-
Small red or pink heart shaped candies
Directions
-
Step 1
Mix together 1/2 cup royal icing with the black or brown food coloring until desired shade is reached. Transfer to a small squirt bottle. To create the head of the ladybug, outline the area with black or brown icing (see template ). Draw several zigzags across entire surface of the outlined area. If necessary, use a toothpick to spread evenly. Using tweezers, add silver dragees to create eyes. Sprinkle head with black or brown sanding sugar. Let dry.
-
Step 2
Mix together 1 cup royal icing with the red or pink food coloring until desired shade is reached. Set aside 1/4 cup red or pink icing and transfer remaining red or pink icing to a small squirt bottle. To create body, outline the area with red or pink icing (see template). Draw several zigzags across entire surface of the outlined area. If necessary, use a toothpick or offset spatula to spread evenly. Using tweezers, add white dragees to create spots. Let dry.
-
Step 3
To create black or brown spots on cookie, squeeze two 1/2-inch dots of black or brown icing about 1/2-inch apart from one another in the center of the body (see template). If necessary, use a toothpick to spread evenly. Using tweezers, add a heart candy to each spot. To create remaining black or brown spots on cookie, squeeze dots of black or brown icing about the same size as the white dragees over body (see template). If necessary, use a toothpick to spread evenly. Let dry.
-
Step 4
Add more red or pink food coloring to reserved 1/4 cup red or pink icing to create a darker shade of red or pink. Transfer to a small squirt bottle. Using dark red or pink icing, make an outline around the body of the ladybug and down the center (see template). Let dry.
Sur la tab also sells the squeeze bottles for decorating in a kit or individually, which is nice for trying out.
The Toyota Highlander Banner-- 6 of them-- covered up the top half of the page and wouldn't go away.
Pampered Chef has a set of 3 squeeze bottles and a variety of tips, plus a bottle brush.
Where can you find the ladybug cookie cutter or do you have to make it based on the template?
I found the squeeze bottles at www.kitchengifts.com
Where can I purchase the plastic bottles used for the icing?
What a great idea.
The other source Dani refers to is CK Products, Ft. Wayne, IN
The other source Dani refers to besides New York Cake
Does anyone know where you can purchase the white candies used for the white dots on the ladybugs. I believe they were referred to as non pariel clusters on the show, but are called white fruit imperial candies in list of Ingredients. Help!
Chris

Martha mentioned that her rubber bands are sold at Macy's.
Martha mentioned that her rubber bands are sold at Macy's. I'm going to purchase some too. What a great idea!
Where can you purchase the rubberbands (of sorts) for rolling pin which prevent rolling dough too thin.
I made this icing with the meringue, which I found at Michaels. I added some lemon extract and red food coloring for a delicious valentine's day cookie. I also halved the recipe and had enough icing for about 50 cookies!
what was the name of the website she said to get supplies?
hudsnsmom you can find the squite bottle at Michael or a cake and candy suppler.
I know this has been asked, but does anyone know where you can get those squirt bottles? That's the neatest idea ever!!
i tried making these cookies this afternoon. don't know if i was hurrying or what. they are very delicate cookies. mine kept breaking apart. any help?
Wilton makes Gel paste, which you can buy at a craft store, like AC Moore or Michael's. There's no way you an get a true red or black color withoout it.
Do you have to make the royal icing? Can you buy it already made? Where do you get gel paste?
I tried the link suggested for the cookie recipe to make this cookie. The only recipe directions are to decorate the cookie, not the recipe to actually make the cookie to be decorated. The link given only leads right back here. Please help me find the actual cookie recipe.
really cute cookies! does anyone know where to find the small squeeze bottles they used for the frosting? such a great idea.
We have just finished making these cookies. What a fun project and the cookies are delicious. I made these with my 18 year old son and his girlfreind. They loved the project and became quite creative.
You can find this cookie cutter and all the necessary decorating supplies to make this lovebug at www.coppergifts.com Their cutter looks just like the one used on the show. This site is an awesome place for cookie bakers and cookie lovers alike!
The cookie dough recipe that was shown can be found here http://www.marthastewart.com/recipe/chocolate-cookie-cutouts-love-bug-co...
I routinely save my royal frosting in the fridge at Christmas, but never for more than a few days. I think you're safe so long as you've stored it appropriately.
Sorry I just found it. Thank you.
When these cookies were demonstrated there was a cookie recipe with the demonstration but the recipe doesn't seem to appear here. Can I please have a link for the recipe. Thank you
Can the royal icing be saved to use later?
maria- dam (outline) the royal icing, then flood (fill) with a thinner royal icing. To make the icing thinner, just add a little more water.
I am having problems and not being able to download the template for the lovebug cookies. Any help????
Make your own cookie template. Save the cutting edge from a box of aluminum foil or plastic wrap and make the desired shape. Connect the ends with wire, tape, etc.
maria- you outline the cookie first with the royal icing (dam), then fill it in (flood) and smooth it out, being careful to smooth the icing to the outline.
I see from the template that you're supposed to "dam and flood" the red icing. I get the flood part but how do you dam the icing so it doesn't bleed or run off the edges of the cookie?
Lady bug cookie cutter can be found here for $1.95
