Cookie Hearts
Dani Fiore makes sugar cookie hearts topped with sweet Valentine's Day sayings.
On a clean surface, roll out fondant. Using small letter-shaped cookie cutters, cut out desired letters; set aside until dried, about 10 minutes.
Meanwhile, mix together half of the royal icing with the red or pink food coloring until desired shade is reached. Transfer to a small squirt bottle with a wide tip. Leaving 1/4-inch border, outline the heart shaped cookie with colored icing. Draw several zigzags across entire surface of the outlined area. If necessary, use a toothpick to spread evenly. Add letters and sprinkle with sanding sugar, if desired. Let dry.
Mix together remaining royal icing with white food coloring. Transfer to a small squirt bottle. Outline colored area of heart with white icing. Add candy-coated chocolates, mini marshmallows, gumdrops, or Red Hots. Let dry.
The squirt / squeeze bottles are Kuhn Rikon brand and are available at Sur La Table, Crate and Barrel and Amazon. Google "squirt bottle decorating tips" for direct links. The cookie recipe link has been identified below by BrandyGunderson. Also try Cooks Illustrated Glazed Butter Cookies (minus the glaze). Fondant attracts moisture and the icing may be slightly damp even though it appears dry. Don't cover with foil.
I made these cookies for my family a few days before Valentine's Day. The day I decorated them, (just as in the video) I put them, uncovered on cookie sheets in my cold oven to keep them out of sight and let them dry. Several hours later, I covered them with foil and left them there for another day and a half. When I uncovered them this morning, the Fondant letters were sticky and gooey. I'm not sure what happened, the rest of the decorations were dry.
