Block-Print Poppies

Poppies' graphic outlines are a cinch to block-print onto fabric: Brush strokes of textile paint in saturated tones. Start with the stem and leaves to help map out the composition.
Fabric poppies -- to pin to belts, dresses, and hats, or to tuck into hair -- are a snap to gather and stitch from silk or another bright, shiny fabric.
These buttery cookies capture the flower's graphic outline, the curvy form of its petals and its pollen-flecked center. And with a delicate glaze of royal icing, they take on the timeless lemon-poppy seed combination.
Poppies are as fetching in the form of icing on cupcakes as they are in nature. The beautiful buttercream poppy is dotted with poppy seeds and flavored with fresh orange juice and zest.

The petals of these pastries are made by cutting the dough in a special way and folding the edges over; cherry preserves top the center of a cream cheese and poppy-seed filling.
