650 Quilts. Two Colors.

What's red and white and stitched all over? "Infinite Variety: Three Centuries of Red and White Quilts" was a remarkable textile exhibit at New York's expansive Park Avenue Armory. The six-day event, put on by the American Folk Art Museum, showcased the red and white quilt collection of Joanna S. Rose in a dramatic aerial display (artist's mock-up pictured).

The exhibition's limited palette highlighted a traditional hue pairing for quilts. Red dye became popular among 19th-century quilt makers for its availability and propensity to maintain its color. The 650-piece exhibit, true to its name, showed the diversity of classic and modern designs that just two colors can yield.
