-
4 to 5 slices white sandwich bread (about 4 ounces total), torn into large pieces
-
4 tablespoons (1/2 stick) unsalted butter, melted
-
2 1/2 pounds Gala apples (about 6), peeled, cored, and cut into 1/2-inch-thick slices
-
2 tablespoons freshly squeezed lemon juice
-
1/3 cup packed light- or dark-brown sugar
-
1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon, plus more for serving (optional)
-
1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
-
Vanilla ice cream, for serving (optional)
Directions
-
Step 1
Preheat oven to 375 degrees. In a food processor, pulse bread until coarse crumbs form (you should have about 2 cups). Spread breadcrumbs on a rimmed baking sheet; bake until golden, 8 to 10 minutes. Let cool completely. Transfer to a bowl, add butter, and toss until coated.
-
Step 2
Meanwhile, place apples in a large bowl, and toss with lemon juice. Stir in sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, and half the breadcrumbs. Transfer mixture to an 8-inch square (or other shallow 2-quart) baking dish. Sprinkle with remaining breadcrumbs. Cover dish tightly with aluminum foil.
-
Step 3
Bake until fruit mixture is bubbling, about 40 minutes. Then remove foil, and continue baking until breadcrumbs have browned and apples are easily pierced with a paring knife, 10 to 15 minutes more. Let cool at least 15 minutes before serving. Top, if desired, with vanilla ice cream sprinkled with cinnamon.
I made this recipe with wheat bread but I think 2 cups of bread is too much. The bread was not crispy.

Crisp ?
Buckle ?
this was pretty tasty. not super sweet. made it for mr my boyfriend who loves apples and he thought it was great.
I like the idea of using wheat bread instead of white bread! I imagine it'll just take a second or two longer than with white bread to get it toasty, but that's an excellent idea! Thanks, kkach!
Westshoe: the one your mom made is close to a crisp. In food processor blend sugars, butter, flour, oats and spread on top of apple mixture. It is crispy and 'toothy' you know it's crisp and delicious b/c it's not made with bread. It's my favorite. Keep looking for crisp recipes or email me and I'll send you mine. sofia100@sbcglobal.net
What is the difference between Brown Betty and Crisps? Which is the one with Oatmeal. butter and brown sugar? That's the one my Mother made and I miss.
Has anyone tried whole wheat bread instead of white. I'm tryinng to make this alittle more healthy. I've tried oatmeal with this recipe once, but it was too dry.
This is one of my favorites. My mother used to serve it hot with cold 'Hard Sauce' (room-temperature butter, mixed with granulated sugar (not confectioner's) and a bit of brandy). Out of this World!
I baked this and for a nicer snap I layered several slices of Kraft cheese.and a hand full of rasians,I sort of layered them inbetween. Yummy. Kind of the old favorite "Caperotada" lental dish served in so many of our hispanic homes during Lent...dottie
My husband and children love this.
