Ask Marc: Guinea Pigs, Cats, and Rabbits

Marc Morrone answers questions about pet grooming and diet.

I have a guinea pig with long hair. Do I need to brush him?
Guinea pigs do benefit from brushing, especially if they have long hair that makes them prone to heavy shedding. Groom your guinea pig regularly with a small, soft brush.

My cat has dandruff. What can I do to get rid of it?
You can try adding some fatty acids to your cat's diet, such as linatone or Dream Coat, both of which are available in supplement form at pet stores. You can also buy some flax seed oil from your local health food shop and add a teaspoon per day to your cat's food. Monitor the amount of dryness present in the skin over the course of a few weeks to see if there's any improvement. It's also a good idea to check with your vet to make sure your cat isn't having some kind of allergic reaction -- or a more serious condition -- before you start any treatments on your own.

Is green leaf lettuce okay for rabbits?
Green leaf lettuce is fine, as is alfalfa, brussel sprouts, parsley, and watercress. A variety of vegetables is important to ensure your rabbit gets all the nutrients it needs. Just be sure to introduce them into your pet's diet slowly, one thing at a time. Be certain to watch for any signs of stomach upset; if your rabbit feels a bit under the weather, go easy on new foods until he or she gets used to them.

My friend's rabbit bites her brother. Any ideas that can help rabbit stop doing that? The rabbit lives in a cage outside with lots of fresh hay, etc. Thank you, Marc, for answering this question.
