  • 1 small yellow onion
  • coarse salt and ground pepper
  • 1 1/2 pounds ground beef chuck (80% lean)
  • 4 split plain or sesame-seed buns
  • 4 large eggs, cooked over easy
  • Ketchup or barbecue sauce
  • Sliced canned beets
  • Lettuce leaves

  1. Heat a grill to medium-high. Clean and lightly oil hot grill. Cut onion into thin rings and season with salt and pepper. Grill until lightly charred and crisp-tender, about 4 minutes per side. Transfer to a plate. Form ground beef into 4 patties and season with salt and pepper. Grill 4 minutes per side for medium. Transfer to bottom halves of buns. Top each burger with an egg, grilled onions, your choice of sauce, sliced beets, and lettuce.

Cook's Note

Indoor Method: In an oiled grill pan or cast-iron skillet, cook onion over medium-high. Wipe skillet clean; cook burgers in same pan.

I really wanted to love this burger as I LOVE all the components. However, the beets didn't add anything! The grilled onions and the egg though were delicious. I am proud to say my burgers looked exactly like the ones in the picture. Yay!

This burger is the best ever. Beetroot is a must on any burger. As an Aussie living in Canada for a few years I truly missed this. However, I was travelling through Alaska and stopped at a roadhouse. I ordered a burger and you can imagine my response when the lady asked me if I wanted beetroot with that!!!!! I almost kissed her. You find gems in the most obscure places. Beetroot... I love you.

As an Aussie grill cook, I can tell you a 'burger with the lot' or 'the works' is (working from the bottom up) bun bottom, lettuce, tomato, beets, ground beef, onions, pineapple slice, egg, bacon, bbq sauce, sliced cheese, top bun. This is the roadhouse type of burger.

Hi from an Aussie living in Canada for 12 months. This burger is very close to the ones I grew up with and serve at home. However we also add bacon and a slice of canned pineapple. In Oz this is called a "burger with the lot"!

Greetings from an Aussie. Your Aussie Burger is fairly close to authentic. However, here are the traditional ingredients:
    Ground beef

Never encountered eggs on burgers down under!!
