Hot Chocolate with Marshmallow Hearts

Nothing says "I love you" like a warm mug of chocolate with floating marshmallow hearts.

  • Yield: Makes 4 cups
Hot Chocolate with Marshmallow Hearts

  • 4 cups whole milk
  • 2 tablespoons sugar
  • 2 tablespoons plus one teaspoon unsweetened Dutch-process cocoa powder
  • 4 tablespoons finely chopped or shaved semisweet chocolate
  • Vegetalbe oil or cooking spray
  • Large marshmallows


  1. Bring milk, sugar, cocoa powder, and chocolate to a simmer in a medium saucepan over medium heat, stirring until chocolate has melted (do not let boil). Pour into mugs.

  2. Grease a heart-shaped petit four cutter or aspic cutter with vegetable oil or cooking spray. Cut several marshmallows in half horizontally, and then press the cutter into the center of each one. Float the marshmallows and the cutouts on hot chocolate.

    I forgot to mention that you can make your own homemade size marshmallows. Martha has a great recipe. Large marshmallow squares with a designed middle could be used as a side treat instead of in the hot chocolate cup.

    I found small cutters in the d'oeuvres section of a kitchen ware store. But I also have other very small cutters that came with a snowflake cookie cutter set. The smaller ones are used to make designs in the large cookies.

    do you think it would be almost as good if I used skim milk and Splenda? I wonder if Splenda could somehow be used for the marshmallows?

    Another cute idea for those of you who love the heart marshmallows, especially if you were to use them to garnish a cake, is to dip the cut side into colored sugar!

    I loved this hot chocolate. It was delicious although I drank it pretty quickly so I felt sick to my stomach when it was gone. I'll definitely make it again but will linger over it a bit more. :o)

    Love the marshmallow ideas. I would make these and put them on top of a chocolate iced cake or a pink iced cake, for Valentine's day.
