Hot Lips Pillow

Introduction

Valentine's day decor goes mod with these sleek red lip pillows from Simply Sublime crafter Jodi Kahn. For a matte look, substitute felt, T-shirt material, or any fabric with a little give for the vinyl.

Materials

  • Hot lips pillow template
  • 1/2 yard stretch vinyl
  • Scotch matte-finish "Magic" tape
  • Sewing machine with coordinating thread
  • Parchment paper
  • Pen
  • 1-pound bag polyester craft stuffing

Steps

  1. Step 1

Print template, enlarging 300 percent, and cut out. Fold vinyl fabric in half, right sides together, and tape pattern to template. Cut out two lip-shaped pieces. Tip: Avoid using pins on the vinyl, which can create holes.

  2. Step 2

Use a few pieces of tape to secure the two lip shapes together with right sides facing. Stitch around the edges with a 1/2-inch seam allowance, leaving a 4-inch opening on the top and bottom.

  3. Step 3

Clip into seam allowance (without cutting seams) along the curves and corners to ease turning. Trim the seam allowances to 1/4 inch, but do not trim the seam allowances near the openings.

  4. Step 4

Turn the pillow right side out, finger-pressing the edges. Cut a piece of parchment paper that is the same size as the sewn pillow. Using the template as a guide, draw the center lip line onto the paper with a pen. Tape the parchment paper directly on top of the pillow, lining up all edges.

  5. Step 5

Sew the center lip line onto the pillow by stitching directly on top of the parchment paper, following the drawn line. (The parchment paper guide will help you sew on the slippery vinyl.) After sewing, carefully rip the parchment paper away from the fabric, leaving only stitching.

  6. Step 6

Tightly stuff both section of the lips with polyester batting, working with small pieces so that the stuffing is as smooth and free of lumps as possible. Slip-stitch the open edges closed in each section.
