This recipe has been a go-to for me for years. I use it for all cut-outs and sub the butter for earth balance to make it dairy-free.
The recipe says to use a teaspoon
If anyone has tried this with cinnamon or almond extract...how much did you use?
Thanks!

You can get Scottie cookie cutters (any many, many others) at cookiecuttershop.com
Where can i find a Scottie cookie cutter?
Love the idea about dipping the cutter in the bowl of flour. I will have to use it next time.
Place small amount of flour in a shallow bowl, dip the cutter in the flour then cut your shape on the rolled out dough. Flour helps prevent sticking. If your dough is cracking maybe you have too much flour that was called for in the recipe.
They cracked when out of fridge and then stuck to cookie cutter and counter when I tried puttting the dough back together. What am I doing wrong?
These had a wonderful flavor. I ended up just rolling them out
The one thing I would change about the receipe is that instead of dividing in half and then adding the cocoa. I would just make two batches and with one no cocoa and the other double the cocaa and have a bunch of scottie and Westie dogs.
There is a variety of dog shaped cookie cutters available from The Cookie Cutter Shop in WA state. Their website is: www.thecookiecuttershop.com. I faxed them my order for a scottie, poodle and laborador dog cutters. Their email is: info@thecookiecuttershop.com. William Sonoma's scottie dog is cute, but too big (4x6"). I wanted a 2 bite-size (3.5") cookie cutter like the one Martha shows above. This company has some unique cutters and was pleased to find cheerleader cookie cutters
Williams-Sonoma has Scottie cookie cutters for $10.
I love this recipe and have changed to using orange instead of lemon also ginger instead of cinnamon. The mind can boggle when you think about it. I haven't tried using lavender as yet but I know it has been used in shortbreads.
This is a cute Idea. But, I don't have a scottie, I have a black labbie. So I'll branch out and make chocolate labbies instead! I'm sure somebody makes a lab cookie cutter. Fun!
this is so weird. I have this recipe somewhere and wanted to make them for Christmas. Now i don't have to look for it. Thanks
I found and continue to find an assortment of all kinds and sizes of scottie dog cookie cutters on eBay.
Where do you get the scottie dog cookie cutter?
Deborahasc this is NOT a dog treat recipe. This is for human consumption. There are a lot of these cookie recipes even William Sonoma sells their own scottie dog cookies for humans to eat. Martha, please don't remove this recipe as I was looking for this such recipe and so happy I found it on your website!!!
Martha,
I typed in "cookies for dogs" in your recipe search and this cookie came up.Dogs are not to consume chocolate, they will become extremely ill, and in some cases ingesting chocolate could lead to death.
In this recipe, it calls for cocoa powder as one of the ingredients.Does cocoa powder act in the same way as chocolate does to dogs? And if so, please remove the recipe immediately! Thank you,a fellow dog lover.
How cute. My sister-in law loves her Scottie and is visiting in July. I had found a set of Scottie coffee mugs and her favorite hazelnut coffee. This will make the gift more personal. Thank you!
I would love to have a template for the scottie dog. I happen to have a Scottie and I would love to have a template or purchase a scottie cookie cutter.
Your Idea is great. I agree with the other lady. This is a good Idea for the holiday also. Why do I always have to label
Martha, Many of your recipes indicate that flour should be spooned and leveled; is that the case with this Scottie Dog Shortbread cookies? The recipe sounds delicious!!

Martha is it possible to have a template for the scottie dog? So we can trace the dough. Thanx!
These are so yummy and cute! A HUGE hit in the office and with kids. I gave some as gifts...decorated with the little plaid bows. Almost too ADORABLE to eat!!!
